Since 1891, the Board of Regents and the New York State Education Department have overseen the preparation, licensure, and practice of the professions. Currently, the Office of the Professions regulates forty-eight professions defined in Title VIII of the Education Law.

The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) is a nonprofit professional society of over 11,000 members in 78 countries. AEE believes in promoting the scientific and educational interests of those engaged in the energy industry and to foster action for Sustainable Development.Also, AEE offers a full array of informational outreach programs including seminars (live and internet based), conferences, journals, books, and certification programs.

The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) is a volunteer board of renewable energy stakeholder representatives that includes representatives of the solar industry, NABCEP certificants, renewable energy organizations, state policy makers, educational institutions, and the trades. NABCEP offers certifications and certificate programs to renewable energy professionals throughout North America.

The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) is a recognized global leader, supporting the development of a highly professional building performance industry through individual and organizational credentialing and a rigorous quality assurance program. BPI's certification, accreditation and quality assurance program are designed to support the building performance contracting industry.

The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI)  provides third-party project certification and professional credentials recognizing excellence in green building performance and practice. GBCI administers project certification for commercial and institutional buildings and tenant spaces under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating Systems™ addressing new construction and ongoing operations.

NYSERDA is supporting the development of a statewide network of training programs for those interested in an energy career. New York State has set ambitious statewide goals for becoming more efficient and using cleaner, renewable energy. Training program for the green workforce includes installation of clean energy technologies and energy efficiency improvisation.
